(NYSE: AWA), parent company of America West airlines, reported first quarter profit of $33.6 million, or 63 cents per share. But that wasn't enough to make the street respond to the airlines results.Shares of the Tempe Arizona-based airline were off as much as 15 percent in early NYSE trading Wednesday following the first quarter profit results being released by the air carrier. Though those results were not as important to investors as the news that US Airways and America West were in merger talks.Underlying the merger talk's interest amongst investors was the fact that America West's first quarter profit results were from one-time items, not its operations. That put concern on dilution and combined results in the future, should the two air carriers come to terms on a merger agreement.

Travel Agents Without the one-time gain of $60.5 million from hedging its fuel costs, America West actually lost $10.3 million, or 30 cents per share, for the quarter.Though analysts had expected a loss of 61 cents per share, America West's first quarter results excluding the one-time gain in fuel hedge investments, were much better than estimated.

Discount Airfares America West did achieve an improvement in passenger seat miles flown for the quarter, climbing 7.8 percent. The airline said it focused on not offering below-market, or cheap seats, too early and that fact that its air routes were in demand by travelers.
