In case you missed my post on the subject back in May ( Attention, frequent flyers: you have big problems ), most airline frequent flier programs have begun instituting use-it-or-lose-it expiration dates on accrued miles. In some cases the deadline within which one must use miles has shrunk to a ridiculous 18 months. The financially strapped airline industry is understandably searching for ways to save money, but its seems to me that punishing their own most loyal customers by suddenly changing the rules of the relationship and revoking their frequent flier privileges may be entirely the wrong way to go about doing so. travel agencies

Now at least one airline is compounding its actions with greed. A friend, who a few months ago saw more than 50, 000 miles evaporate from her long-established US Airways account simply because she hadn t used them or earned more in the past 18 months, recently received an email from US Airways offering to reinstate those miles...for a price. It was entitled Get your Dividend Miles back and gave her three options. travel guide

Option 1: Sign up for a US. Airways credit or debit card, all but one of which carry and annual fee (and with the caveat that she would have to make a purchase with the card to get her miles back). Option 2: Pay a service charge of $300. Option 3: Purchase a ticket to fly First Class or Envoy Class on US Airways. The kicker The fine print on these offers to reinstate her miles carried yet another 18-month deadline. time travel

Is this how airlines now reward loyalty By taking away the rights and privileges their frequent fliers have earned and then holding them hostage with the promise to return them only in exchange either for a cash payment or for further shows of loyalty. That s not customer appreciation. That s an abusive relationship. The airlines can do better. travel lodge

Oct 11, 2007 We should be enthusiastic about low-cost airlines, but not entirely oblivious to the conditions they often impose

Most smart travelers know that any dirt-cheap plane ticket is going to come with some standard restrictions: no refunds or exchanges without incurring a penalty of $200 or more, requirements that you purchase the ticket two weeks in advance, your trip straddle a Saturday, and you stay a minimum of seven and maximum of thirty days. But some discounted fares come with restrictions you might not even notice until they come into play. travel com

A friend recently reported that, after years of purchasing discounted plane tickets to Europe from the noted and excellent consolidator 1-800-FlyEurope (www.1800flyeurope.com ), he ran into an unexpected snag on a recent trip to Italy. The tickets -- on which he saved nearly $100 over advertised fares by using 1800-Fly-Europe -- routed him through Amsterdam on Northwest/KLM. Weather delays caused his outgoing flight from New York to Amsterdam to be cancelled. A helpful Northwest agent at the airport obligingly rebooked him on a new flight with a partner airline that had an added benefit: it would fly direct to Rome and get him in even earlier than planned! us airlines

His relief was short-lived, however. As he walked away from the desk, the agent called him back with an apology and some bad news. His discounted fare had come with restrictions on flying any airline other than Northwest/KLM and on flying any other route than the one scheduled. In short, he had to wait to be rebooked on a KLM plane, and he had to fly via Amsterdam. travel sites

He ended up flying a ridiculous new routing via Detroit, where he had to dash through the airport, barely making a connection to Amsterdam, where again he had to run to catch the plane to Rome. He also arrived in Rome about eight hours after he was originally scheduled to do so, in effect losing an entire day of his trip to extra flight and backtracking to Detroit. In a stroke of sheer luck, his luggage actually managed to make all the connections. discount airfare

The moral: the consolidators of discount fares, and the budget airlines themselves, continue to be a reliable source for discounted airfares, but be prepared to ride out any potentially bigger bumps in the road that come with the fare rules. Also, make sure you read the fine print on any discounted ticket, as the savings may come with more restrictions than you realize. travel packages

The Golden Girls Restaurant isn t named for the eponymous TV series, but for the two Golden girls -- Golden being the maiden names of the two owners. They specialize in home cooking, and have the scrumptious cakes and pies to prove it. Try the Tennessee Country Ham dinner at $8.25 or the catfish (broiled or fried) at $6.25. Country Morning Breakfast consists of delicious biscuits, two sausage patties, scrambled eggs, gravy and hash brown potatoes, for $4.25. And they re right next door to the Anderson County Tourism Office, talk about convenient location. Golden Girls, 2211 Charles Seivers Blvd., Clinton, tel. 865/457-3302. international travel

About halfway between Clinton and Oak Ridge on Highway 61 is the Riverview Grill, overlooking the Clinch River. They say they serve Southern Fare with a Casual Flair and I can vouch for their True Tennessee BBQ Ribs, actually St. Louis style, half a rack costing $12.99. That comes with two sides. They also have pulled pork ($9.99) and Po-Boys (from $5.99), and a roll of paper towels on the table for messy hands after eating the ribs. For quick lunches, consider the Hoskins Drug Store, opened in 1930 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, featuring an old-fashioned 1940s soda fountain. Favorites here are homemade soup, chili and hamburgers. This may be Appalachia, but they offer fancy foreign food styles, too, such as panini sandwiches ($4.75). I would go for the milkshakes ($2.50) or banana split ($3.99), myself. If you want to see a movie, consider the Ritz Theater next door, also on the list of the National Register of Historic Places. Hoskins Drugs, 111 N. Main Street, Clinton, tel. 865/457-4340, www.hoskinsdrugstore.com . cheapest airfares

Consider Costa Rica or one of the islands in the Caribbean. mesa airlines

sujomo (# 6 of 31) 07:02am Aug 24, 2007 EST Definitely think about Croatia. Split and Dubrovnik were two of the stops on our recent cruise. It is fast becoming one of the newest hot spots. It is absolutely beautiful there.
steele1580@comcast.net (# 7 of 31) 07:44am Aug 24, 2007 EST Argentina is affordable. Costa Rica is very affordable, easy to get to and flights are cheap. China is still bargin. Ditto for Thailand. Travel to Canada is cheap. Although the Canadian dollar has appreciated significantly, affordable travel within Canada is possible. artnuvo (# 8 of 31) 07:53am Aug 24, 2007 EST try portugal, including lisbon, nearby sintra, and then fly from lisbon to barcelona on vueling. haert56 (# 9 of 31) 07:55am Aug 24, 2007 EST My Fiance and I traveled to Vietnam in October of 2006 and found it quite a value. There are beautiful resorts on the coast. Take a look at Hoi Ann. We loved the country, its beauty and the people. The best to the two of you.
sbernhagen (# 10 of 31) 07:58am Aug 24, 2007 EST A group of us have found a wonderful romantic spot in Tenerife, Canary Islands. The cost of food and travel is minimal and it is beautiful.Brit Air has some reasonable flights from Chicago thru London. The people are so hospitable and shopping for memorable pearls is a treat. The Flamenco Dancers are special. By the way, the cost is not more with a travel agent. Travelworker daniel love (# 11 of 31) 08:36am Aug 24, 2007 EST ssophier- First of all, congratulations on your upcoming wedding. I love Costa Rica-but not during the green season. Translation: rainy, monsoon, or whatever adjective you want to use. CR is cheap and amazing, but go Dec-May. I recommend 2 strategies, since you are flying from Chicago. First, if you want to go to the Caribbean, I recommend that you fly to a destination that has a direct flight from ORD. Connections to most Caribbean islands are invariably through Miami or San Juan, PR, and they eat up a lot of time. If you go south, I would recommend flying to St. Thomas. It is a US territory, and anything with a Saint in it is good. I would then be creative. I might stay a couple of days there, but St Johns is more romantic and it is only a 15 minute ferry ride away (from Red Hook). Most of St. John is a national park, and it is beautiful. If you have some extra days that you want to use to explore the region, by using St. Thomas as a hub, you can easily do day trips to the British Virgin Islands such as Tortola, Jost, and Virgin Gorda. St. Thomas has 5 ferries to Tortola daily, for example. Thus, you get the exotic experience of visiting the BVIs, which are VERY expensive, for the cost of a day trip ferry ride ticket.

If you go to Europe, the former Soviet Block countries are the way to go. Again thinking outside the box, I you look for the cheapest air fare that I could find from Chicago to a city I would like to visit in Western Europe. For example, London, Paris, Rome, Munich, Madrid. I would consult whichbudget.com, which is a remarkable search engine for finding discount airline fares WITHIN Europe. Prague, for example, has CHEAP air to/from most major cities in Europe. As an example, if you found a great airfare to Paris, I would fly there, spend a few expensive days seeing the important sights, and then I would scoot over to Prague, Budapest, etc., for some CHEAP cultural immersion. You could even go to Kayak.com and search for a Chicago flight to Paris and back from Venice, for example, if you wanted to visit 2 fabulous (but expensive) cities in Western Europe fairly cheaply. By cheaply, I mean that spending 2 nights in Paris and 2 in Venice is expensive, but the cheap nights in Prague balance out the costs, as opposed to flying to Paris and spending your entire time there. BE VERY CAREFUL AND READ THE WEIGHT AND BAGGAGE RESTRICTIONS ON DISCOUNT AIRLINES IN EUROPE BEFORE BOOKING. THE EXTRA FEES CAN BE KILLER IF YOU ARE A HEAVY PACKER. defense travel system

Hope this gives you some ideas. (I used Kayak and used the above strategy to plan my 21 year old daughter s flights to/from Europe this summer, when she studied in Greece. I routed her to Munich (on KLM) on the way over, for 2 days, to see Neuschwanstein Castle, and back through Venice (on Alitalia). Dlove5555@aol.com continential airlines
